What are ‘caravans’?
A ‘caravan’ is any structure designed for human habitation that is capable of being transported. It must be assembled from no more than two separate sections, remain movable and be no larger than 20×6.7m (80m2) with an internal height restriction of 305cms.
The term ‘caravan’ applies to touring caravans, motorhomes, static caravans and twin-unit caravans known as park or mobile homes.
In essence, the laws that allow a touring caravan to be sited in a driveway are the same laws that allow a mobile home to be located in a garden.

Although the size of a twin-unit mobile home is limited, at 20×6.7m it’s still considerably large, enough space for over five bedrooms, toilets, kitchen and living spaces, significantly larger than most buildings probable of obtaining planning approval as annexes. Usually a caravan in the garden doesn’t affect permitted rights for other outbuildings and extensions.
